The next First Friday takes place on March 6th and includes an art exhibit of work from students in the Forest Learning Collective, an interdisciplinary international group exhibition, and an exhibit in Celebration of Women’s History Month. Coordinated by the Cultural Council of Cortland County, First Fridays offer the community an opportunity to explore talent from local and international artists. All are invited to attend this event, which features activities at Cinch Art Space, the Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland, and the YWCA Cortland. “First Fridays offer a lot of options,” notes Cultural Council Executive Director Kat McCarthy, “you can get the map online or at a participating venue, and then select your destinations depending on what events call to you.”

Over the course of the evening, each venue will be offering its own unique activity. Cinch Art Space welcomes in the Forest Learning Collective artists for a gala opening around the theme “Light.” The Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland will be presenting an interdisciplinary, international group exhibition, Measured Confluence. The project features works combining physics, fine art, and performance in a collection of three-dimensional objects, installations, drawings, and digital media video installations that introduces artists from the US, the Czech Republic, and Bosnia. Visitors at YWCA Cortland can view an exhibit in celebration of Women’s History month, including information about the 19th Amendment. August 18, 2020 is the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution. It declared “the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” It is nicknamed "The Susan B. Anthony Amendment" in honor of her work on behalf of women's suffrage.

Activities typically take place from 5 – 8 pm, and individuals should refer to the event map or Cultural Council website for details about each participating venue. For more information about First Friday, please visit: https://www.culturalcouncilofcortlandcounty.org/first-fridays
