FIRST FRIDAY Art Night October 5 5-8pm ABOUT: Cortland First Fridays joins an informal nationwide movement to celebrate the arts in local communities on the first Friday of each month. Participating galleries, studios, artists, interested businesses, music and performing arts venues will be open to the public from 5 pm to 8 pm to spotlight the arts. VENUES October 5th: The 1890 House Museum: Chester Wickwire has died! Experience a 19th Century wake this October at the 1890 House Museum. You’ll learn about Victorian funerary customs and superstitions. What were the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of mourning? Hear Victorian funeral music, sample period food, and learn the truth about the death of Cortland's most famous citizen! Cheerful & Creative: Get your marbling art with a MAKE & TAKE Halloween Masks! Mizu Marbling will be back to help you create the most colorful, fun, and customizable Halloween Masks during First Friday! There are three options to choose from: butterfly, princess, and superhero. For more information or to sign up visit their online page. The event takes place between 6 and 8:30 pm, and costs $25 per item. Cinch Art Space: Stop by the Corset Building to hear New York's premier veggie folk-rock band, The Local Farmers Union, and stay for an activity. The band will be playing selections from their new album, Kale-In-It, which will be available at Cinch, among the works of over 60 local artisans and craftspeople. While there, you can also create your own 8 x 8 fall decor pumpkin sign with Hayley Hammond of Hammond Rustic Creations. Reservations are required to participate in the activity, and costs $15. The Cortland Free Library: Come to the 2018 Regional Photography Show's opening reception, featuring the works of 22 local photographers. Now in it's eighth year, this annual event sponsored by the Cultural Council of Cortland County offers an opportunity to see many talented photographers from our community. At 5:45, awards will be announced by nationally published photographer, Bob Gates. Starting at 6, visitors will be treated to the lyrical music of harpist Lisa Fenwick. The event also includes a display of 2018 Foto Frenzy entries, refreshments, and the presentation of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award. Instant Artist: Create your very own striking 10 inch round resin geode or agate art plus an additional 8×10 canvas geode/agate art piece. Advanced registration is required and costs $40 per person; more information can be found on www.theinstantartist.com. SikoraArts: Artist Martha Phillips will be exhibiting her new abstract paintings. Phillips uses the basic elements of form, shape, line and color to bring forth simple yet elegant images in the tradition of Hans Hofmann. A grand reception with German themed refreshments and live music is planned. "SikoraArts" located at 1010 McLean Road, Cortland, NY. It is at the corner of Pleasentview and McLean. They are open on Friday October 5th from 5-8pm. Other hours for the space are by appointment by calling at 607-597-9227. There will be signs pointing to the entrance. YWCA Cortland: October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The YWCA Cortland will display “The Clothesline Project.” It includes t-shirts painted by victims of domestic violence. The t-shirts are color coded to show the form of abuse they experienced. Additional information will be available in the gallery.
