“Shellback: The Story of a WWII Sailor,” Saturday, Nov. 15, 1:00 pm at the Central New York Living History Center. Presentation and book signing by author Karen Foresti Hempson. Refreshments served after the presentation. Shellback was inspired by real people who lived through the Great Depression and World War II. It centers on a young boy, born to Italian immigrant parents, who endures tough times with the singular goal of escaping poverty. He becomes a sailor taking part in major Pacific battles of World War II—including Pearl Harbor, the Aleutian Islands, Guam, Tarawa, and Saipan. The author places her fictional characters into well-researched, authentic historical events.
