As soon as you walk into the Elfcup Boutique, you can't help but smile. A cheerful amalgam of vintage and modern, classic and cheeky- there is something to be found for everyone's taste. We asked Sam Daniels, the owner of downtown Cortland's newest boutique, to take a moment to answer a few questions for us.
What inspired you to open Elfcup Boutique?
I’ve always wanted my own brick and mortar shop where I could interact with the community. I figured I’d open Elfcup Boutique way in the future, but this opportunity essentially fell into my lap and I couldn’t pass it up.
Where did the name Elfcup come from?
So I love and collect all things mushroom related. I was reading a list of common names for mushrooms and found Elfcup and it just stuck!
Why choose downtown Cortland, for your shopfront?
Being from Cortland, I remember going to Mando Books as a kid and loved the community feel. I really enjoy knowing people who walk through my door and interacting with them.
If your shop was a song, what would it be and why?
If my shop was a song, it’d probably be Sister Golden Hair by America. That song is so happy and bright- how I want my store to feel.
I know you just opened, but are any exciting projects (or future projects) in the works?
So many! I’m constantly trying to work with new mediums myself. I’m working on some resin pieces and someday would love to host fun events! (Tiki night or a murder mystery?)
What item do you have in your shop, that is a staple in your home?
All of the items! (haha) I have quite a few of the macramé plant hangers by Maslin’s Guarden! They make any home so much cozier.
What is your favorite locally made item (perhaps one you sell)?
Lately, I’m really digging the hand poured candles from Waxing Moon Candle Company. I worked with the owner to have an exclusive “Elfcup” scent and it’s heavenly.
What is Cortland County’s best-kept secret?
Cortland County’s best-kept secret probably has to be the abundance of great garage/estate sales! I’ve found the coolest items at an absolute bargain.
Describe Cortland County in three words.
Evolving, artistic, and supportive
