First Friday in Cortland County

Cortland First Friday joins an informal nationwide movement to celebrate the arts in local communities on the first Friday of each month. Participating galleries, studios, artists, local businesses, music and performing arts venues will be open to the public throughout the evening to spotlight the arts. March 3rd welcomes the return of First Fridays in Cortland County. We've taken the time to highlight a few stops along the trail. 

EMILY GIBBONS' PAINTING STUDIO

Emily carefully divides her time between creating stunning watercolors, painting vivid murals, framing artworks, and caring for her young son. Inspired by both the local landscape and Ireland's dramatic vistas, she creates and teaches both here and abroad, exploring their tentative connections. All of Emily's paintings of Ireland, framed and unframed, will be on sale during March's open studio.

CORTLAND REPERTORY THEATER

Creative Cortland is a continuously evolving platform for artistic and imaginative expression and appreciation. This year’s exhibition explores the concepts of connection. For First Friday, artists will create art live through various mediums, exploring the idea of connection. Enjoy a cocktail and a nibble while watching the featured artists as they develop their artworks. Suggested donation of $5 at the door.

Sikora Arts Gallery is a new art space that focuses on promoting and valorizing American Abstractionism, particularly in artworks that follow the footsteps of the Abstract masters. Atmospheres of 2023: An Exhibit of Abstract Art is the debut of a series of paintings by Robert Sikora. Critics and the European new millennium market have enthusiastically recognized this project.

Join the Center for the Arts opening reception for Development in Art by Richard Nolan. Richard Nolan's undulating creations are constructed principally from cherry and black walnut hardwoods. Utilizing conventional woodworking tools, hand sanding and a strong reliance on self-developed techniques, the artist develops pieces with seamless joining, creating the illusion they are sculpted from a single wood block. Admission is free.
