A Student’s Guide to Exploring Cortland County: A Weekend Itinerary
Looking for a reason to get off campus and explore what Cortland County has to offer? As a student myself, this two-day itinerary is designed specifically for SUNY Cortland students who want a mix of art, thrift finds, local food, and outdoor adventure. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly weekend plan, a study break, or just a fresh way to experience the area, this guide highlights some of the best places to visit close to campus.
Day 1: Art, Thrift, and Downtown Energy
Saturday | Morning | Campus
Start the day at the Dowd Fine Arts Gallery to check out the latest student or local art exhibits. The gallery’s rotating displays showcase work that’s creative, thought-provoking, and unique to Cortland’s art scene. It’s the perfect place to begin my adventure and set the tone for a day of discovering local gems. For a fun surprise, check out the gallery’s mini art vending machine, a transformed cigarette machine where you can pick up a small original piece of art to take home.
Saturday | Afternoon | Downtown Cortland
Kick off your downtown adventure with a thrifting circuit:
-
Begin at Lot 1 Vintage for curated pieces and one-of-a-kind finds.
-
Then head to Cortland ReUse to browse furniture, décor, and quirky dorm upgrades.
-
Catch the Centro Bus route 4 to end your afternoon at Thrifty Shopper, perfect for affordable clothes, accessories, or just some browsing fun.
Take a break and refuel with lunch at Gorgers. You can’t go wrong with their Banh Mi sandwich, a local favorite that hits the perfect sweet-savory balance.
Saturday | Evening | Downtown Cortland
For dinner, try Veracruzana Mexican Restaurant on Main Street and enjoy a flavorful, laid-back meal. Known for its authentic dishes and welcoming atmosphere, it’s a great spot to unwind and find something everyone will love. Then, keep the energy going at Cortland Beer Co., where live music and local craft drinks make for the perfect student night out. It is also a great spot to bring your parents when they’re in town.
Day 2: Outdoor Adventure and Homer Charm
Sunday | Morning | Lime Hollow
Start day two with fresh air at Lime Hollow Nature Center, one of the best outdoor spots near campus. With more than 12 miles of scenic trails, wildlife, and peaceful natural surroundings, it’s a great place to hike, clear your head, and enjoy a slower pace for the day. If you do not have a car, a rideshare or carpool is the easiest option. If you can't get there, try Waterworks right outside campus, where you can sit down and enjoy the natural beauty and even feed the deer, ducks and geese while you're at it.
Sunday | Afternoon | Homer
After your hike, make your way to nearby Homer and treat yourself to a well-earned lunch at Nicky C’s Pizzeria. Known for their creative twist on specialty pizzas and welcoming small-town charm, it’s the perfect spot to relax and refuel. If you’re visiting on a Saturday, check out the Homer Farmers Market in front of the Center for the Arts, where you’ll find fresh produce, handmade goods, and friendly local faces.
While you’re in town:
-
Stop into Sinfully Sweet Café for homemade chocolates, cookies that will cure homesickness, and coffee.
-
Visit M Guardens on James for dorm-friendly plants and greenery, or try your hand at one of her macramé classes.
-
Catch a show at the Center for the Arts to wrap up your day with some culture.
Sunday | Night | Downtown Cortland
End the weekend on a relaxing note with takeout from Kalash Kitchen for a cozy night in. The kabab platter is one of my favorites and is a great choice if you want something filling after a long day. Kalash Kitchen has the ultimate comfort meals, especially late nights after the bar.
For a perfect pairing, grab a new book from All My Friends Books, and you’ll have everything you need for a cozy night in before the week ahead.
