April 16th is a big day for Ashe Martin. A muralist and mosaic artist, Ashe is celebrating the grand opening of Forged from Ashe Studios, in the Cortland Corset Building. Having practiced the craft for well over 10 years, Ashe is incredibly excited to begin teaching others.

We asked Ashe to share a little about the space, before the big event.

What inspired you to open Forged from Ashe?

I have always been a crafty and artistic person. I have worked in many industries and in recent years discovered that I find great fulfillment in teaching others. Having a passion for art has only made it that much more enjoyable to teach. My inspiration was a desire to work for myself and teach others.

Where did the name come from?

Ashe is my name and I hope eventually pursue a career in blacksmithing. I wanted a name that would eventually translate for that. Forged from Ashe also represents the idea of rebirth. To be made from the ashes. I'm starting a new path for myself.

Why chose the Corset Building, for your studio?

The Corset Building has a lot of rich history and it's palpable when you are in the building. The owner Peter is had worked very hard to provide space for local crafts ppl, artists, and small businesses at an affordable price. I very much hope that my business will contribute to all the other wonderful businesses located in the building by bringing traffic and awareness to this wonderful space.

If your studio was a song, what would it be and why?

Al Stuart, The year of the Cat.

I know you just opened, but are any exciting projects (or future projects) in the works?

I'm providing classes in Mosaic and Paint and Sip! Classes became live on my website, forgedfromashe.com, starting in April 2022. You can go to my website to sign up. Classes are normally Wednesday evenings, Friday evenings, and all day Sunday. Im also offering an open studio option that allows you to come and work on a personal project or the themed project for the month on your own time. This allows me to have more one-on-one direction with people who want to expand their craft. Starting in the summer I wil be adding classes on Saturdays as well.

I will also offer a mobile Paint and Sip option where I come to you or your event!

What is your favorite locally made item?

I'm a little biased here but Food and Ferments! I'm addicted to dilly beans! A healthy gut is a healthy mind!

What is Cortland County’s best-kept secret?

Cortland is rich with talent. In the 4 years I have lived here, daily I have been amazed by the number of talented people I meet. Also waterfalls.

Describe Cortland County in three words.

I was having trouble with 3 words so I just came up with 3 ways to describe Cortland.

Beautiful views. (The reason I fell in love with this place.)

Fertile land.

Strong sense of Community.
