Come to Grace and Holy Spirit Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland, at 3 pm on Sunday, November 10, to enjoy the first concert in the 16th season of The Arts at Grace. Matthew Gillen will offer colorful, diverse interpretations of solo classical guitar repertoire from all time periods.  All are welcome.  There is no charge for admission; donations are appreciated.  Interested audience members will meet the artist at a post-program reception.

Praised by The Classical Guitar Society of Upstate New York as possessing “sensitive, energetic, and thoughtful musicianship” and “beautiful phrasing”, Matthew Gillen has become a frequent prize winner at international guitar competitions. Most recently, he received first place at The Lone Star Guitar Competition. Past awards have included first place at the East Carolina University Guitar Competition, the 20th Annual Appalachian GuitarFest, and the Classical Guitar Society of Tallahassee Competition. He has also played in concerts in various parts of the United States.  Finally, he was selected to tour Costa Rica in 2014 through the Promising Artists of the 21st Century program sponsored by the Centro Cultural Costarricense Norteamericano.

Gillen currently is pursuing a doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. There he is Teaching Assistant with Adam Holzman.  He holds a Master’s degree in Performance from Florida State University where he studied with Bruce Holzman. Gillen earned a Bachelor’s degree in Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College where he studied with Pablo Cohen.

Now in its 16th season, The Arts at Grace is a community outreach of Grace and Holy Spirit Church supported by individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations from the greater Cortland community, including the Cortland Community Foundation, the Wilkins Foundation, the J.M. McDonald Foundation, and CNY Arts/NYSCA. Free will donations at concerts are gratefully accepted.
