The community is invited to come together to honor the life and legacy of Captain Michael “Buzzy” Andersen at the Captain Michael “Buzzy” Andersen Memorial Run in Cortland, New York. The event celebrates a dedicated firefighter, competitive athlete, and community leader while raising awareness about the occupational health risks firefighters face.
Captain Andersen served 22 years with the Cortland City Fire Department and an additional 15 years as a Fire Investigator. Known for his courage both on the job and off, he fought stage 4 lung cancer with the same determination he brought to his service. Captain Andersen passed away on February 7, 2024, from job related cancer.
A passionate runner and canoeist, he helped coordinate and certify many local races and was instrumental in starting the Cortland Pumpkin Run. This memorial race honors his legacy while bringing the community together to celebrate his life and continue raising awareness about firefighter health and safety.

Course Information
The race begins near Courthouse Park, weaving through the hills of Cortland and portions of the SUNY Cortland campus. Runners will travel toward the Pashley area before turning around and heading back to the start line.

Day of registration will be accepted this year. Cash only.
Community members, runners, and supporters are encouraged to participate in this meaningful event honoring Captain Andersen while helping raise awareness about the silent dangers firefighters face every day.
