The Tioughnioga River is a large deep pooled river that flows through Cortland and Broome counties. It begins in Cortland (Cortland County) where the East and West Branches combine, and then flows south for 34 miles until its confluence with the Chenango River (Broome County) at Chenango Forks. The Otselic River, a major tributary, enters the Tioughnioga near Whitney Point.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There are four miles of Public Fishing Rights (PFR) along the river with two PFR parking areas. The Tioughnioga is probably best fished from a canoe, kayak or small car-top boat. The river can change dramatically during melts and heavy rainfall. Be sure to follow all NSC safety guidelines and wear a life vest when paddling in the river. Practice Leave No Trace principles. LAUNCH
There are also two free DEC boat launches along the river.
The Marathon launch is in the park adjacent to the Marathon Civic Center at 16 Brink Street. It is a steep cement launch with a shallow dirt hand launch adjacent. There are no public amenities. Restrooms. Picnic facilities are located in the park. (42.491725°N, 76.074441°W)
The East Branch of the Tioughnioga River can be accessed at Yamen Park. It is a hand launch located at the south end of the park. There are restrooms and picnic facilities located in the park. (42.608486°N, 76.157893°W)
