Greek Peak is home to Cortland County's premiere 18-hole disc golf course, located in Hope Lake Park. To play, a day pass is $5, and a season pass is $29. The course is open from dawn until dusk. If you don't have your own discs, stop by Greek Peak's Adventure Center, where you can rent a set for $10 or purchase your own limited edition Greek Peak disk.
We asked Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Club member and course volunteer Tucker Middleton to give us some details about what disc golfers can expect out of the course. Tucker, how would you best describe the Hope Lake course?
As the course is now, it's a technical, relatively short course with both lodge-goers and experienced disc golfers in mind. It has a few open shots, a few “park style” holes with some trees, and a good deal of heavily wooded holes with technical, fun lines to throw. The course also takes advantage of a lot of the elevation that the property at Greek Peak and Hope Lake has to offer.
What level of play is the course geared towards?
The current layout is designed with both new disc golfers and professional disc golfers in mind. We really wanted anyone just coming and staying at Hope Lake lodge, even if they had never heard of Disc Golf before, to be able to experience a fun course without getting frustrated at the difficulty of the course. We also wanted to draw experienced disc golfers from all over with a fun course, that's not too easy.
What is the average length of a hole?
The average distance is 320ft with the longest hole being 691ft (hole 18) and the shortest 204ft (hole 4). The total distance of the course as it stands is 5773ft.
What groups or clubs are associated with the Hope Lake course?
There are 2 of us mainly involved in the design and we are officers and members of The Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Club (GBDGC). Troy Widden is my fellow GBDG officer and course designer. We are working alongside Brian Baisley, the course builder from Greek Peak, to develop the Hope Lake Disc golf course. The course is open for all clubs and individuals to use and enjoy. GBDC has been instrumental in getting the tournament scene going. The course at Greek Peak has also received a ton of assistance from the members of the Central New York Disc Golf Club.
Are there any future plans for the courses? Are there any plans to expand the Greek Peak course?
I always have thoughts of new local courses, but the Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Club is currently working on 2 courses, (Nathaniel Cole Park and Campville), including the one at Hope Lake/Greek Peak. As for Hope Lake disc golf course, yes, we have big plans. We have been designing with two tee pad locations and green locations on each hole. The tees and greens that are ready to play now are the short tees and the short greens. The long tees and long greens are to come to life within the next few seasons. The idea is to make Hope Lake Disc Golf course a championship-level course that will draw players from all over the country as well as host large, multi-day tournaments.
