The Village of Homer is now home to the cheekiest little garden shop there ever was. M. Guardens on James is little slice of plant paradise. The charming shop is brimming with lush flora, endless macramé creations, unique pottery, whimsical home goods and everything you need to live your best plant parent life. We pinned down owner Julia Maslin between trips to her greenhouse for a quick interview about her newest space.
What inspired you to open M. Guardens on James?
I always wanted a little store front, and this opportunity just happened to present itself! I thought the idea of a storefront for me would be just that, an idea. While out to dinner one night I saw the sign for rent, met the landlord, and thought, why not? After some very long days and nights, lots of work to rework the interior, order products, and get all the business things in order a month later the doors opened!
Where did the name M. Guardens on James come from?
The name is a play on my last name and my maiden name. My maiden name is "Guard" and I always thought I would do something "Guarden" with it. When I opened the store front on James Street in Homer, I decided to change my business "Maslin's Guardens" name to "M. Guardens on James". I like the sound of it :)
Why choose the Village of Homer for your shopfront?
I chose Homer because I grew up here and live fairly close to the shop. I love the area and this spot is in a nice little location; just off the Main Street.
If your shop was a song, what would it be and why?
I don't know if I can sum my store up in one song because the shop keeps changing and evolving as I go. I think an Artist that fits the vibe of my stop right now is Noah Kahan, for a few reasons. We listened to a lot of Noah Kahan while painting, installing floors, and decorating. He sings a lot of songs with that small town vibe and coming back to a small town. I think that his style is what this area is.
I know you just opened, but are any exciting projects (or future projects) in the works?
There are definitely some projects and events in the works as the store grows. The shop still needs a grand opening! I'm planning that for Friday, September 13th. Extended late hours, refreshments, specials in the store, and a few raffles. Also working on small macramé class events in the shop and a little Murder Mystery - plant style! That's scheduled for Friday, October 18th. A play off of my guilty pleasure show- Murder, She Wrote. The Plant Murder Mystery will be Murder, She Root!
What item do you have in your shop, that is a staple in your home?
All of the items! (haha) I have quite a few of the macramé plant hangers by Maslin’s Guarden! They make any home so much cozier.
What is your favorite locally made item (perhaps one you sell)?
Of all the items in my shop, I of course have the plants and macramé I carry in my own home, too. Most of my windows in my home have some sort of macramé hanger and plant displayed in the window. I make all the macramé items I carry in the shop and in my home. I really like the plant care line products I carry, too. Heck, I love everything I carry in my shop! Some of my other favorite local handmade items are from local jewelry makers and pottery makers. I'm a sucker for jewelry and pottery!
