Looking for outdoor winter fun that is away from the ski slopes? For the families that love the winter months, there are plenty of enjoyable activities in the Finger Lakes that will get the whole family excited for snow.
Tubing Slide down the mountain in a tube
Tubing can be great winter fun for all ages. Greek Peak Mountain Resort Adventure Center makes tubing even easier with a lift that will take you to the top of their 15 tubing lanes. Bring the whole family and get a discount for groups of 20 or more! Tubing can also be found at Toggenburg Mountain too!
Fat Tire Bikes
These mountain bikes are great all year long but work really well during the winter months on snowy terrain. Their fat tires allow you to have more traction in the snow and can climb uphill with ease but still give you a great work out. Trails at Greek Peak have been made specifically for these bikes, so you won’t interfere with their cross-country trails or snowshoeing. You can rent bikes from the Adventure Center for either a couple of hours or the full day and there is a modest trail fee.
Snowshoeing is a great and inexpensive way to get outside during the winter months. If you seek family fun between the snow-covered trees, there are plenty of snowshoeing options in Cortland County. There are no special skills required for snowshoeing. As the expression goes “if you can walk, you can snowshoe” making this a great way to enjoy the winter months with the whole family. You can explore Cortland County’s natural wonders on terrain snowshoes which are designed for easy walking and are the best kind for families. Where to snowshoe? Explore Lime Hollow Nature Center. With its nearly 430 acres, there is a two-mile trail speciality designed for snowshoeing that the whole family can enjoy. You can rent snowshoes at their visitors’ center.
Did you know that you can rent a kicksled from Hope Lake Lodge at Greek Peak Mountain Resort? Rentals start at 1 hour, half day or the full day. What’s a kicksled? It’s a small sled that has a chair mounted to ski-like runners. You kick the sled to move it forward while holding onto the handlebar. Glide through the winter landscape with the whole family. From the youngest in the family to the grandparents, this is a great way to get moving in the great outdoors this winter.
Cross Country Skiing
The Nordic Center at Greek Peak offers miles of pristine cross-country trails that offer a variety of terrain for every skill level. With a warming hut on site, you can make a full family fun day on the trail. Rentals are available along with lessons to get you started! Lime Hollow Nature Center offers a well-marked ski trail that is just over a two-mile loop that is easy to moderate. Your journey starts and ends right at their visitors’ center. The trail meanders through gently rolling hills, open fields, pine forests, and nearby ponds and streams. Rentals are available right at the Visitor Center.
