459.5 feet. That is how long the 18th hole is at Shipwreck Golf. It is the longest mini golf hole in the world and holds the Guinness World Record. That is impressive. Experience Cortland dug out our golf glove and set off to see if we could at least make par.
Shipwreck Amusement Center has a scenic mini golf course with a festive pirate theme. There are giant ships, palm trees, plenty of skulls and crossbones, and of course pirates lurking about the course. Each hole is challenging enough, but Shipwreck takes it a step further with pirate spinners at most of the holes. Each player spins and could end up with additional challenges like the “Pirate Leg” where you can only use your foot to hit the ball for every shot on the hole, or “Step To” where you must complete the hole within 10 seconds after your first shot or suffer a 1 stroke penalty.
Throughout your visit the calming sound of all of the water features help to take the competitive edge off. That is until you arrive at the world record holding 18th hole.
The journey to a Guinness World Record took nearly a year for owners Patricia and Stephen Jordan. According to Guinness, they receive around 5,000 applications a week. Once the Jordans submitted their application (which included drone footage of the 18th hole) Guinness had to check and double check around the world before awarding them the Guinness World Record for the Longest Mini Golf Hole.
The 18th hole is a whopping par 54. The hole is broken down into four sections: 18a, 18b, 18c, 18d each with their own pars. Each section is marked by signs telling you when to start recording that particular section and when it ends and the next section begins. The 18th hole circles the rest of the course and along your journey there are clever signs of encouragement and even one recommending that you should’ve brought some lunch along the way! Good thing Shipwreck sells food and ice cream right inside.
At the very end when you get to the 18th hold finale you can put to win a free game. Shipwreck Amusement Center has grown into a year-round amusement family fun center with a glow in the dark indoor course, paintball, and a bounce house, so no matter the season or weather this is a great family friendly spot. And how cool would it be to say you pared the longest mini golf hole in the world?
