Equal parts funky and functional, the Truxton Outpost is exactly what this neck of the woods needed.

Equal parts funky and functional, the Truxton Outpost is exactly what this neck of the woods needed. Upon stepping through the cowbell cladded door, I am greeted by the chatter of a bustling café, and a friendly hello from behind the counter. The entire place smells of baked goods, fresh coffee and pine. I feel as though I've been transported to some tiny frontier town.

Coming in from a cold morning spent hiking, this is exactly the reprieve I've been seeking. I make a beeline for the counter and place an order for a black coffee, a cup of buffalo chicken soup and one of their famous gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. While the friendly staff organizes my order, I take a moment to wander around the shop.

Locally crafted arts and goods line the shelves.

The front half of the outpost is filled with all sorts of locally crafted goods. Glittering jars of jam and honey, hand-carved furniture, perfectly captured photography, and unique jewelry, are all thoughtfully curated into displays that are pure eye candy. A stack of crates, filled with dog leashes, collars and toys catches my eye. I pluck out a handmade, fuzzy, tug toy for my pup, patiently waiting in the car.

Locally raised meats and dairy fill the coolers.

Great barn wood beams hang overhead, as I walk into the back half of the shop. One wall is lined with coolers, filled with all sorts of locally raised meats, cheeses, eggs, and dairy. I add a carton of fresh eggs and a quart of Trinity Valley Dairy eggnog to my rapidly filling bag. Directly across from the coolers is a wall of shelves, lined with all manner of pantry items, reminiscent of an old-fashioned market. No outfitter would be complete without garments and footwear. Designer boots and hunting gear, share space at the back of the shop. Steel toe or glitter, camo or fridge, the Truxton Outfitter has a little something for everyone's taste and needs.

Heading out the door with my arms and belly full, I'm already planning my next trip back. Next time your adventures take you to Truxton, be sure to stop. It is truly is a special spot, overflowing with charm, delicious food, one-of-a-kind items, and plenty of staples, you're sure to find just what you need.
