Just 10 miles outside of Cortland, and I feel as if I've been transported. The bustle of downtown quickly gives way to rolling hills, dotted with Victorian houses and cattle peacefully munching hay. Truxton, New York oozes quintessential bucolic charm, and the Truxton Outpost is right at home in its center.
Our host greets us at the café, and instantly the delicious aromas make my stomach growl. We place a dinner order to bring back to The Guesthouse, Truxton's newest Airbnb rental. Nestled between the Outpost and sweeping views of the mountains, lies our escape for the evening.
The familiar song of a screen door welcomes us as we immediately make a b-line to the open concept kitchen and cork a bottle of New York cider. I can't wait to dig into my dinner, a gorgeous rice bowl made with beef from Next-Gen Farm, just a three-mile stroll down the country road. As we eat, we spread out a map and search out nearby adventures.
Bellies sated, we decide to take in an evening walk through the park (John J. McGraw Field) located directly behind The Guesthouse. We take in a specular mountain sunset from the bleachers, as we watch snowmobilers taking advantage of the groomed trails. A trailhead parking lot is just kitty-corner from our Airbnb. It hosts snowmobilers in winter and mountain bikers in summer. The Finger Lakes Trail, running thru Morgan Hill State Forest, is just a few miles down the road. I'm making a mental note to wake up early for a sunrise hike to Tinker Falls.
Bidding my friend goodbye, I kick off my shoes and sink into the massive, cozy sectional. This thing could fit a family of six! There is a big screen TV on the wall, with access to all the streaming networks, but I opt to read a book instead. I can't remember the last time I spent the evening somewhere so perfectly quiet. As I relax and take in my accommodations, I become aware of so many thoughtful touches. The furniture is a charming mix of antiques, luxe, and handcrafted. Homemade cookies are left on a tray by the couch, the bathroom is stocked with oft-forgotten necessities, and the kitchen is filled with all the cookware and dishes you'd need to cook a hearty meal. It feels somehow both homey and entirely special.
Finally, I relent and make my way to one of the two, darling bedrooms. I find it blissfully devoid of any electronics and gleefully crawl in with my book. A thoughtfully placed bedside lamp glows beside me as I melt into the most comfortable bed. The sheets smell faintly of flowers and I can just make out the most fantastic display of stars out my bedroom window.
I wake having slept more deeply than I have in ages. I wander into the kitchen and brew a cup of coffee, while I get ready for the day. I grab a chocolate chip cookie and fill my travel mug.
Adventures await.
